When All Else Fails… Transit Saves the Day

February 10, 2010

Rapid Transit Always Works - Green Growth Sustainable TransportationRain, snow, or shine rapid transit does NOT disappoint.

This week I journeyed over to New York City to have some fun (and explore their transit system of course).

First I was able to easily take New Jersey Transit trains from New York’s Penn Station to Philadelphia’s 30th St Station and back for easily under $20. Then while back in NYC I easily navigated the gridded blocks of Manhattan as a pedestrian and a subway rider like a native New Yorker!

It was easy as pie (even easier actually).

Now today, there was a huge snow storm that hit beautiful Manhattan and I was supposed to take a plane out of here. That was canceled. And so were several other flights. Cars were stuck and most MTA busses were delayed as well. But what held STRONG was the subway system and high speed AirTrain. I was easily able to get to the airport, get mad at airline reps, and get back to where I was staying just by walking and taking rail — EVEN THROUGH THE SNOW!

Amazing isn’t it? This just goes to show how investments in TOD infrastructure can really pay off in all conditions.
